RACING Magic Circle’s Fast Mile In Training

Magic Circle capitalised on favourable conditions b’ making fast time for a mile in training at Riccarton yesterday The lightly.grassed No. 1 offered very fast footing, and time flattered even some of the moderates.

Magic ‘Circle (J. Dsach) ran his mile in Im in 39 3-ssec, the first half brillliantly in 48 3-ssec. I He continues to show much ability in training, but he ran a weak race in' the Geraldine Cup last time out. Magic Circle ft a lightweight entrant for the Wellington Handicap next week. Gay Tommy (W. Beck), another Wellington Handicap entrant, ran his mile in Imin 44 3-teec. He easily won the Ashburton Cup at hft latest start. . The stablemates Golden Howe (McGuire) and Navarone (J. H. Jones) ran their mile in Imin 43 4-ssec and the last half in 50 3-ssec. Golden Howe was nominated for races at Trentham, but he ft not certain to :make the trip. I He has 7-1 in the Wellington Handicap and finding a suitable rider at the weights i could be a problem. Burgos Fit Burgos did not make fast time for seven furlongs, but he impressed with hft smooth galloping under restraint. Ridden by A. H. Eastwood, and accompanied by Quick Jinje (Collins), he recorded Imin 33sec and 52 2-ssec for the last half mile. Belle Comtesse (A. Barr) recorded Imin 30 l-ssec for seven furlongs. Belleville (C. McDonald) joined in near the five furlongs, and they ran the last half mile in 50 i2-ssec. One of the surprises of the training was a brilliant half mile by Zetland Leigh. He had little weight to carry with'L. Williams up, but his 46 2-ssec was still meritorious. He won hft first race at the Geraldine meeting last week, and could quickly improve the record. Two of Ricckrton’s more capable three-year-olds shaped well in short sprints. Francisco (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) recorded 47 l-ssec for I half a mile. Improving He has been off colour for a while, but he improved in the last few days and should soon pick up lost condition. Waverley (Leach) ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec. He has to miss a race at the Geraldine meeting because of soreiness, but he threw off the i trouble quickly, and should be fit for a campaign amongst i the hacks at Trentham. I Timna (A. J. Stokes) was shading Balallan (Wjlder- : moth) finishing half a mile in ■5O l-ssec. I Timna is carrying plenty

of condition, and making steady progress for a campaign at Trentham.

Now that Cadiz and Braganza have been sold to the United States, Timna ft the only winner in J. C. Tomkinson’s team.

Tomkinson is also working Hush Lady and three unraced two-year-olds. One of them ft Zinda which ran ftalf a mile in 52 l-ssec at Riccarton yesterday. He was accompanied by Lovely Clover, and they were under restraint until well into the straight. Two-Year-Olds Seaend (Beck) and Newbrook (R. McDonald) dashed over half a mile in 47 4-ssec. Newbrook trailed for a start but drew up to finish alongside the filly. Seaend is a brown by Able Seaman from the good winner. Surprise Ending. She will do her racing for Mrs J. F. and Miss F. H. Kerr. Newbrook ft an attractive Belvedere-Pevensey gelding. He will carry the colours of

the Riccarton trainer, J. S. Shaw. Earlier, a Sabaean-Fair-child gelding, also .from the Shaw stable, reeled off half a mile in 48 l-ssec. Roman Maid (Baldwin) was keen to quicken while running half a mile in 48 3-ssec. Her stablemate Abou Ben Adhem (T. Wilson), hard held, was restricted to 52sec, time equalled by Portent (A. J. Stokes).
