38 YEARS WITH RAILWAYS
Mr L. W. Davis, Of Gisborne
(N-Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, October 2. Mr I*. W. Davis, chief stationmaster at Gisborne, will end 381 years’ service with the New Zealand Railways (including duty as a naval and Air Force wireless operator in, two world wars) when he retires this week.
Joining the Post Office as a messenger in 1916, he trained as a cadet in the Oamaru telegraph gallery. He resigned to go Overseas as a wireless telegraphist with the Royal Navy for the duration of World War I. On returning to New Zealand, Mr Davis joined the Railways Department at
Christchurch. Be served at Amberley. Mataura. Otautau, Addington, and Lyttelton. In 1941, Mr Davis was posted to the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a wireless operator, and served in New Zealand, at Bougainville, and in the Solomons, where be was seconded to the United States First Marine Air Wing communications centre.
After the war, Mr Davis served io Christchurch. Auckanld. and Otahuhu, before his appointment to Gisborne, last December. A -
