KINDERGARTEN HELPERS

Tribute To Work

“The Kindergarten move- , meat is one of which New Zealand can be justly proud,” said Miss N. Gallagher, direc- ■ tor of Pre-School Services, in Christchurch yesterday. “The associations which ■ control the kindergarten are ' voluntary bodies and as such call on the time and effort ' of many thousands of people. Councils, committees and mothers’ clubs, all pull together and give generously of themselves and their money to provide for young children what is a worthwhile experience.” But the extent of their efforts could not be measured in money or time alone, Miss Gallagher said. The true results could ohly be seen in the many thousands of children who benefited froth the results of their work, and who, as a resist of kindergartens, were more co-opera-tive, better able to make friends and better able to adjust themselves to the tasks that lay ahead. “The habit of Concentration that is developed by a little girl working painstakingly at a painting or puzzle is going to stand her in good stead when she is asked to concentrate on ihore difficult tasks in the field of formal learning later,” said Miss' Gallagher. --■ "Ability to trust othets and to make friends, established early in the child, will remain with her through all the years to come.”
