INCREASE IN SALARIES
Bus Inspectors Given £52 Year
Christchurch , Transport Board inspectors are to be given a rise in wages of £52 a year. The new rate will be effective from September 4. The board decided this at its meeting yesterday.
The inspectors applied for an increase in salaries before the termination of their industrial agreement in March, 1962. New awards have been made in Auckland and Wellington. The new award in Dunedin has yet to be determined. The finance committee recommended the increase in view of recent gains by the Tramways Union.
An application by the Sick Benefit Society for financial assistance, in order that the benefits to sick employees could be increased, was considered and the board decided to make an annual subsidy of £lOO to the society, subject to the members’ subscriptions being varied by 6d a week.
The board also decided that the society should forward a copy of its audited annual balance, and that the subsidy question should be reviewed in 12. months. Mr J. G. Shanfcland described the £lOO subsidy as “niggardly,” and Mr N. R. Forbes asked if the subsidy was to be an annual grant or only for 12 months. The general manager (Mr J. F. Fardell) said the motion was the outcome of Mr Forbes’s own proposal, and that the board would consider raising the subsidy after 12 months.
