SPEECH AND DRAMA

National Study Conference

In conjunction with its annual meeting in Christchurch at Labour week-end, the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Speech and Drama will hold a study conference, organised by the adult education department of the University of Canterbury. Many aspects of speech and language will be covered. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) Will open the conference on Saturday, October 21. The programme of lectures and discussions to follow is:— ' . Saturday: “Effective speech in the commercial world,’ 1 Mr C. H. Cook, commercial manager of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service ,to Christchurch; "Language, communication, and group dynamics,” Miss Nancy Kinross, tutor sister at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Sunday: "Science, communication, and language," Mr G. A. Shouksmith, lecturer in psychology at the University of Canterbury; "The characteristics of English speech and the oral-aural approach to teaching English,” Mr G. A, Pittman, Director of the English Language Institute at the Victoria University of Wellington. Monday: Three lectures by Mr J. N. Thomson, Mrs Neto Neale, and another speaker, all teachers of speech and drama. Mrs Neale will be director of the conference.
