Christchurch And McMurdo
A geo-magnetic storm caused by solar flares has cut the communications between the American base at Harewood and McMurdo Sound. The two bases talked briefly at 7.30 a.m. yesterday but since then communication has been impossible. Geomagnetic storms are not uncommon occurrences and last November one cut communications between the Antarctic and Christchurch for seven days. Although two-way communication ceased at 7.30 a.m., McMurdo was heard briefly at Harewood on two occasions later in the day. Because of the radio silence the scheduled flight by the United State': Navy Super Constellation, which was to have left last evening, was postponed for 24 hours. The United States base at Harewood yesterday was in touch with the picket ship. U.S.S. Vance, mid way between New Zealand and the Antarctic. but the ship could not communicate with McMurdo.
