Australia had replaced Cuba as the major supplier of Canadian sugar imports. Canadian Press reported. A report tabled in the Commons by Mr Edmund Morris, the Parliamentary Assistant, to the Trade Minister, showed that sugar imports from Cuba dropped- to 3.529,046 dollars last year from 14,167.200 dollars in 1953.
During the same period Australia’s sugar sales to Canada rose from 11478.722 dollars to 12,722,548 dollars. In the first five months of 1961 Canada bought 5.291.953 dollars worth of sugar from Australia and 1,742.189 dollars worth from Cuba, which stood fourth in sales after Australia, British Guiana and Jamaica.
