FIRM ACTION DEMANDED
Railwaymen’s Claims
Better wages and conditions in railway locomotive departments should be demanded by the president (Mr A. Munro) and the secretary (Mr C. C. Couchman), of the New Zealand Enginedrivers’. Firemens’ and Cleaners’ Association, when they meet the Government this week to consider the recommendations of the McFarlane board of inquiry into railway work, according to a resolution passed by the Canterbury branch of the assoelation last evening.
The resolution said members of the association had waited patiently since last November when negotiations between the Government and the association were started. The report of the inauiry had been in the hands of the Government for some weeks and members now wanted a firm approach to have their claims granted. Last November the association threatened to strike because of dissatisfaction With working conditions and wages. It asked for a wage rise of about £2 a week for its members.
Action was deferred after the association had talks with the Labour Government, and the inquiry, under the chairmanship of Mr C. A. McFarlane, a former Direc-tor-General of the Post Office was set up.
