STARVATION DANGER
Food Reserves Urged (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyrtpht) LONDON, September 22.A United Nations food expert warned yesterday that large-scale starvation threatened the world’s underdeveloped nations in the future. The expert. Dr. Jurgens Wolf, was speaking to the British Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Council. He urged that under-developed countries in the Far East, the Middle East. Africa and parts of Latin America establish national food reserves. Developed and prosperous countries should then contribute to these reserves from their annual surpluses. Such reserves cpuld combat famine —a grave threat in the poorer countries because of the world’s soaring population, he said. Dr. Wolf is a commodity specialist with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. He told the council that “given wise management” the world had resources capable of feeding its increasing population. This was so even if the present population doubled by the year 2000 to 6000 million, as experts had predicted.
The British Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Council represents growers and retailers throughout Britain. South Africa. Australia. Israel. New Zealand and Jamaica.
