WARNING BY VATICAN
Expulsion Of Priests (N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright I VATICAN CITY. Sept 22 The Vatican still hoped for an end to church persecution in Cuba, but was not afraid of whatever the future might bring, the semi-official Vatican newspaper “Osservatore Romano” said last night. It commented “with sadness but great restraint’’ on the expulsion from Cuba of a Bishop and 135 priests, the British United Press reported. It headed its leading article with the words of Pope John’ “We are still confident. . . .” The measured but extremely serious tone of the article was taken by observers as an indication that the Vatican was giving Dr Castro's regime one last chance to change its course before considering excommunication
“Laying violent hands” on a Catholic Prelate or impeding him in his work implies automatic excommunication for all those responsible. B.U.P. said. 1 The observers recalled that similar insistent last-minute warnings preceded the excommunication earlier this year of all Haitian officials responsible for violence against the hierarchy or expelling them from the island.
