POLITICIAN ATTACKED
Assault In Nairobi <N.Z Press Assn Coppngnt> NAIROBI. September 22 Police patrols were strengthened in Nairobi today after an African political leader was brutally attacked by another African The politician is Mr Oginga Odinga, vice-president of the Kenya African National Union. There were conflicting reports on the nature of he attack. Reuter said Mr Odinga was slashed with a panga. the heavy bush-knife used by the Mau Mau. The Associated Press said he was clubbed to the ground and had been taken to hospital with a suspected fractured i skull I Mr Odinga was attacked m ,broad daylight in the centre [of Nairobi His assailant was believed to be a supporter of the rival Kenya African Democratic Union. Reuter said. Police now fear an outbreak of violence between the two factions The incident comes after moun’ing tension between the two j parties and the growth of ! tribal feeling. ' According to a doctor who itrea’ted him Mr Odinga said: “I was walking along the street when somebody came from behind and hit me on the head I did not see who it was I lost consciousness for a few minutes and don’t remember any more ’’ I The doctor said *'he is not seriously hurt.” but is likely to be in hospital for several days
