Fire Cuts Off Telephones
fNJZ. Preas Aanj—CopyrigM) SYDNIjy, September 22. A Are which destroyed an automatic telephone exchange at the civic centre early today cut off 8000 Canberra subscribers. Officials fear it will be months before normal facilities are restored. Firemen fought desperately to block flames from a corner of the prefabricated aluminium building where costly ajjd complex equipment connected with the main cable was housed, but the blaze soon engulfed the whole building. Emergency ■ links were established with essential services. Police and taxi radio-telephone services cooperated to provide communication with the hospital and ambulances.
