RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT

‘No Increase In N.Z.’

(NX. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sept. 17. New Zealand scientists have detected no increase in radioactivity yet as a result of the recent Russian nuclear weapons tests. Mr H. J. Yeabsley. ActingDirector of the Dominion X-ray and Radium Laboratories in Christchurch, said yesterday there was no need for New Zealanders to be concerned. Rainwater was being collected at Auckland, Havelock North. Wellington. Greymouth, Lincoln, and Invercargill and tested for radioactive Strontium 90. The most important health factor was the total amount of fall-out of long-lived radioactive substances.

The radioactivity of New Zealand milk was also being regularly monitored.
