MARAETAI DECISION

Criticism By Mr Watt

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Sept. 17. The Government’s decision to stop work on the Maraetai No. II power project was a clear indication of its intention to slow down on the development of Wairakei, said a former Labour Minister of Works (Mr H. Watt) today. He said it was also an indication of a decision to reduce power production from the Meremere steam station. The decision to construct the second Maraetai was nothing to do with the Cook Strait cable. Mr Watt said. He called the Government's decision to stop the scheme “short-sighted and cheeseparing.” He feared that the result of the decision, coupled with a slow-down at Wairakei would mean a power shortage in 1964.
