New Cable For Reuters

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, September 1. Reuters today inaugurated a direct 24-hour cable channel to speed the flow of news across the Atlantic. The new channel, leased by Reuters for its exclusive use as a supplement to its existing array of transatlantic communications, connects the agency’s main London newsroom with its United States bureaux. The effect will be to speed the flow of American news into London and will facilitate the flow of the Reuter service to the press of the United States and Canada. Until now Reuter transatlantic system has relied heavily on short-wave radio telegraphy, normally a rapid and efficient means of communication but, at times of radio disturbance, subject to lengthy delays and “blackouts.” Reuter’s general manager, Mr Walton A. Cole, said: “I regard this as one of the most important developments in our global communications ■Structure in the last 10 years.”
