Wingatui Stables’ Good Day At Gore

-The Press" Spertai Service

INVERCARGILL, September 3. Wingatui stables almost made a “clean sweep” at the Eastern Southland Hunt Club's meeting at Gore on Saturday, when they won seven of the eight races.

The sole Southland winner was a hurdler. The Ranger, a member of R. J. Cochrane’s Gore team.

The Era returned to winning form by winning the main flat went, the President's Handicap, easily. She was opposed by a moderate lot. The second leg. the Mandeville Hack Handicap, provided the best finish of the day with Sudd el Nil. Gay Fox and Desperation filling the placing® in that order in a head-and-head finish. The double paid £37 17s for £l, being shared by the holders of 1436 5s tickets in a pool of £16,432. The meeting was held in fine, sunny W’eather. The track was good. On-course the totalisator handled £30,298. compared with £19,744 10b last year. Regained Form The Era, which had not won since the Tapanui meeting on the Gore course last December, did not gave the others a chance in the President’s Handicap, the first leg of the double. She was nicely placed all the way and, racing into a clear lead with three furlongs to run, coasted home the easiest of winners, by four lengths. Peril came from well back for second, with three lengths to the favourite, The Chief, which had every chance. Ranganui made up ground for fourth two lengths away, followed in by Archway, the early leader. Believe Me, Becharre and. after a long gap. Underarm. Believe Me took up the running racing into the back with Becharre, The Era and The Chief ahead of Archway, Peril and Ranganui. Believe Me was under pressure racing to the half, where The Era was trailing ahead of The Chief and Becharre together, with Peril next. With three furlongs to run, The Era raced dear. She had a break of four lengths on The Chief into the straight, with Believe Me, Peril, Ranganud and Archway next. Tight Finish There was a tight finish to the Mandeville Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double, in which Sudd el Nil and Gay Fox finished brilliantly from the rear of the field to be first and second, from Desperation, with heads between the trio.

Desperation, which had been slow out, had headed the leaders inside the furlong. Corvale and Runty also lost ground at the’start. The Spy was smartest out and at the half-mile was clear of Gracefleld’s Pride with Baalbek and Billie together ahead of Corvale and Boawood.

Gracefield’s Pride and The Spy led round the turn and were first into the straight from Desperation and Baalbek, with Corvale and Boa-

wood next and Gay Fox and Sudd el Nil improving from the rear. Desperation took over inside the furlong and just as she looked a winner. Sudd el Nil and Gay Fox swooped down on her. Sudd el Nil got up to win by a head from Gay Fox. with a head to Desperation, a length to Baalbek, which had every chance, end half a length to The Spy. which held on for fifth. Geysel.
