MEMSLE STAKES
Lord Wins At Caulfield (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Sept. 3. Lord redeemed himself yesterday when he won his fourth successive Memsie Stakes (nine furlongs) at Caulfield. After Lord’s two dismal failures over shorter distances since resuming from a short spell, many punters were inclined to believe that he was finished. Yesterday the New Zea-land-bred horse proved them wrong and showed he is almost back to the form that made him Melbourne’s top weight-for-age galloper in the last few seasons.
Lord, which. firmed late In the betting to start at 5/2,
led for the last mile to beat Anonyme by half a head, with Aquanita, three lengths away, third. Lord appreciated the firmer track and the longer distance of the Memsie Stakes and showed all his old brilliance. The New Zealand-bred Holiday should develop into one of the good fillies of the spring, after her impressive win in the Second Glen Eira Handicap (seven furlongs). It was Holiday’s second win in a row and her fourth from six starts. Holiday won under difficulties over seven furlongs at Flemington laet week. Yesterday she firmed to start at 6/4. She ran home an easy winner by two lengths from Bay Mumba (15/1), with Cointreau (9/2), a short half-head away, third.
