Dec. 6,1942
It was on December 6, 1942, that the Sumner Lifeboat Institution made Its biggest rescue. The Union Steam Ship Company’s cargo vessel Kaiwarra went ashore near the beach at Motnnan, two days previously, and attempts to refloat it failed. The Sumner Lifeboat made a 36-mile trip to Motunau. A tremendous sea was running at the time, but the lifeboat took off 18 men on the first run, and then made two more trips to rescue the remainder and all their gear, including radios. “We thought it was ‘curtains’ for us, all right when the southeasterly sea began to pound us on Saturday afternoon.” said one member of the crew to “The Press” after the rescue.
