Scout Commissioner Retires

A message from the Governor - General (Lord Cobham) on the occasion of the retirement of Sir Joseph Ward after 19 years as Canterbury provincial commissioner of the Boy Scouts’ Association, was read at the provincial annual meeting on Saturday. The message was read by the provincial president (Mr A. J. Scott), to whom it was addressed. Lord Cobham wrote:— “On the occasion of this annual meeting of your provincial scout council when you are to farewell Sir Joseph Ward, I should like to say how appreciative I am of the good work he has done during his term of office as provincial commissioner.

“In Sir Joseph Ward you see a man who, at the request of the Chief Scout, took up the cause of scouting and applied himself enthusiastically to the task of making good scouting available to every boy. It is to his credit that such progress has been made that one boy in four in Canterbury is in scouting. “Now that it is time for Sir Joseph Ward to hand the reins to another, he can look back with justifiable pride at the many milestones of progress in Canterbury scouting.

“I should like to join your council in thanking Sir Joseph Ward for 19 years of conscientious service to this great movement, of which each one of us is but a very small part.” The Mayor (Mr G. Manning) introduced a presentation made to Sir Joseph Ward by an anonymous scout on behalf of the scouts of the province. Awards
