Watch As Compass

Sir,—ln "The Press” today is an extract from a letter from Mr T. L. Jones, of Cheviot, in connexion with the basic causes of young persons getting lost in the bush. Mr Jones mentions using a watch as a makeshift compass. Though this is a good standby, it must be done correctly: with the 12 numeral pointing at the sun. a point half-way between 12 and the hour hand will give a fairly accurate bearing north. If used as suggested by your correspondent, a completely erroneous bearing would be found say, at sunrise at 6 a.m. With 12 pointing at the sun, 6 would be pointing somewhere west of north-west.—Yours, etc., S. G. ISHERWOOD. September 2, 1961.
