Alcoholism
Sir,—May I be permitted to agree with Mr Shelton that “the element of sickness” underlying an addiction to alcohol should not be too greatly emphasised, and that “the sense of purpose and striving and personal effort" is never very strong in those addicted to alcohol, except, of course, their efforts to procure more alcohol and to dodge their responsibilities? Mr Shelton could go a little further and tell us just how much this disease of “alcoholism" is costing the country in social security benefits to the dependants of chronic alcoholics, free board in institutions, court proceedings, etc. —Yours, etc., D, C. McKIE. Benmore, August 31, 1961.
