CRICKET Lawry Scores 2000 Runs On Tour

(N Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, August 31 The Australians are set to win their third successive match. They lead the Gentlemen of England by an innings and 208 runs and have all day to-

morrow to dismiss them. The Australian batsmen laid the foundation of this position ty some solid play today. They scored 422 in 426 minutes and led by 227. which was later reduced by the 19 the Gentlemen Scored in the 52 minutes before stumps.

The day was mainly centred around W. Lawry, who reached 2000 runs for the tour when he had made 90 of his 109. This was a fitting climax to a fine season by the young Victorian, who has had a phenomenal tour of England. Only two Australians since the war have made 2000 runs in a tour of England—D. G. Bradman in 1948 and R. N. Harvey in 1953. Lawry’s century today was his ninth of the tour, and only the same two players have made more since the war. Bradman hit 11 in 1948, and Harvey 10 in 1953. Lawry was painstaking throughout the day. He knew his goal and he was determined to achieve it. At the finish he had batted 328 minutes and hit 14 fours. He was associated in two century stands—loo in even time for the second wicket with N. C. O’Neill and 107 in 121 minutes for the fourth wicket with P. J. Burge. Burge batted unobtrusively but he took runs easily off the Gentlemen’s hard-work-ing attack and his 74 was made in 132 minutes with 10 fours

For the rest, it was lighthearted hitting with the lastwicket pair, R. A. Gaunt and L F. Kline, adding 54 in even time. There were some edges and mishits, but also some

good strokes, including a fine six by Gaunt over long-on. off R. G. Marlar. Gaunt's 30 was the highest score of his first-class career. The Gentlemen toiled hard on a perfect pitch. Marlar put in a marathon performance, bowling just one less than 60 overs. He was rewarded by six wickets, but they cost him IM runs. Scores: GENTLEMEN
