Table Tennis Miss Davis’ Loss Major Surprise

WELLINGTON, September 1. The defeat of Miss N. Davis (Northland) by Miss N. J. Attwood, also of Northland, was one of the biggest upsets of today’s play in the New Zealand table tennis championships at Lower Hutt. Miss Davis was the top seed and also the under-18 national ehampion. The second-seeded Miss Attwood beat her 21-14, 21-18. Later this evening, Miss Davis just managed to retain her title when she beat Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) in the women’s singles final. Miss Davis led 2-0 at the third game and then lost two games 23-25 and 19-21. Miss Davis, however, won the last game, 21-12. Miss Brown was content to play a defensive match. She scored off only one offensive shot in the game. In the men’s singles final, M. L. Dunn (Wellington) defeated A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland) in three straight games. All the finalists in the women’s doubles were in the New Zealand team at the world championships at Peking this year. Miss N. J. Attwood (Northland) and Miss B. Packwood (Auckland) defeated Miss N. Davis and Mrs J. Green (both of Northland) 17-21, 21-14, 21-14, 21-11. In the mixed doubles final. M. L. Dunn (Wellington) and Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) beat B. A. Foster and Miss V. E.
