UNIVERSITY HALL

“No Suggestion Of Means Test”

The Presbyterian • Methodist committee seeking to establish a residential hall at the University of Canterbury campus at Ham repudiated any suggestion that it would impose a means test for entry, the Rev. J. D Grocott. secretary of the committee, said last evening In a letter published in 'The Press” on August 31. a correspondent. Mr R. J Brown, asked why the university council had not advised any intention to establish non-secular residential colleges. He said: "If the traditional university ideals of intellectual liberty and inquiry are to be encouraged. the place of the non-secular hall of residence, with no religious control or means test, is self-evident.” “The Presbyterian - Methodist committee is seeking to establish a hall of residence that is inter-racial, interfaculty, inter-communion and for men and women within one compound. This is the general policy where practicable, of our churches in establishing halls of residence,” said Mr Grocott. “I am sure that Mr Brown does not imply that the churches would impose a means test, a term which has unfortunate association in the public mind,” he said.
