EXPRESS TRAIN VANS
“Safer Method Of Coupling*’ (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. The practice of placing any extra vans at the rear instead of the front of express trains had been reviewed and it was considered the present method of marshalling expresses gave greater safety, said the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) in a statement today. He said that only regular express train carriages were equipped with automatic draw gear which was stronger than the normal-type draw gear fitted to vans and waggons. Although vans could be coupled behind the locomotive any gain in safety was more than offset by the greater risk of the train not holding together, because of the weaker draw gear, in the event of derailment. This holding of couplings was an important feature in avoiding serious damage to carriages, and expresses as now marshalled, comprising steel-panelled carriages with specially designed anti-colli-sion ends and automatic draw gear, offered the minimum hazard in the event of accident, the Minister said.
