HANDLING OF POULTRY
Bill To Raise Standards (N2. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. Standards of hygiene in the handling of eggs and poultry are established by the Poultry Amendment Bill introduced in the House of Representatives today. The Minister of Agriculture <Mr Hayman), introducing the bill, said the standards were required because New Zealand was now exporting chicken. Ope clause is designed to ensure that buildings used on poultry runs for holding or storing eggs intended for human consumption are suitable for the purpose. Every poultry owner who discovers or suspects an outbreak of disease in his flock must report the fact to the Department of Agriculture within 24 hours, ensure that no fowls are removed from . the land until they were inspected and that diseased poultry are isolated- Powers are given to inspectors to deal with outbreaks of disease. The maximum penalty for offences against the principal act, the Poultry Act, 1924, is raised from a fine of £2O to £5O.
