BRIGADIER IL GOFFIN
Band Service Conductor Brigadier H. Goffin, formerly in charge of the Salvation Army Band of New Zealand came out of retirement to conduct the annual band service at the Linwood Citadel this week-end. Brigadier Goffin, who is a composer as well as a conductor, has written several marches. The best known, “New Zealand Warrior,” was used as a signature tune to introduce the news service during World War 11. Brigadier Goffin has just returned from the United Kingdom where he visited his son. Major D. Goffin, who is in London in charge of the Salvation Army’s band and songster brigades throughout Britain. For his services, to music. Brigadier Goffin was awarded the M.B.E. in the last Queen’s Birthday honours. He first took up conducting when he was aged 15. He conducted the Salvation Army Band at Plymouth, Devon. Although retired, Brigadier Goffin, who is 76, is training about 50 youngsters between the ages of nine and 13 in band music in Wellington.
