SUBSIDY SCHEMES

Extension For Schools (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 13. Extensions of the policy under which private schools may participate in the sub* sidy schemes that apply to public schools were an- ! nottnced by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) today. "At present," Mr Tennent. said, "private primary schools may receive £ for. £ subsidies on the purchase of a wide range of teaching aids (including library books) and on the cost of learners’ swimming pools. In future, subsidies on grass-cutting equip- ' ment, and on vacuum cleaners, will also be available to them." “Subsidies will also be available on the cost of swimming pools and filtraticr. plants in private post-primary schools, on the some conditions that apply to State schools, but with a limit of two pools a year. The maximum subsidy is £2OOO, up to £l5OO for the pool, and up to £5OO for the 1 filtration plant “In reaching this decision, the Government had in mind that it is part of its policy, in the cause of safety in the water, to intensify the teaching of swimming in schools. We therefore regard swimming pools as a special case, distinct from other school amenities,” said Mr Tennent. ;
