Shooting Accidents
Sir—The Police Department, according to a report, is much concerned about shooting accidents. though doing its utmost to prevent them. This is slightly disappointing to one who, some three years ago, received encouraging support from local police, gunsmiths, and finally the Minister himself, in a private crusade for safer shooting. Mere advice, whether by lectures or distribution of pamphlets on safety precautions, will not reach the root of the marter, helpful as such expedients may be. In about 90 per cent, of cases the so-called “accident” is due to someone's ignorance or recklessness, and the culprit should be dealt with accordingly—as are, for instance, motorists in similar circumstances. No weapon should be sold without an accompanying cautionary brochure, and no licence issued to a novice un’il he has satisfied the police, and not just orally, that he is fully conversant with those instructions.— Yours, etoM.T.
