FREEDOM OF SUEZ
Test By U.K. Warships
■ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. July 4. British warships would put the freedom of the Suez Canal to its first real test since 1956 early tomorrow, the “Daily Mail” reported. Ships of the Mediterranean Fleet had been ordered east through the canal in support of the forces now concentrated on Kuwait, the newspaper said. Advance units would include four mine sweeners and a supply ship. They would be followed later in the week by the aircraft carrier Centaur and at least three destroyers. The British Government did not expect President Nasser to directly ban their passage, but there were fears that he might stage delaying actions, the report said. This test of the canal was vital to the maintenance of British military communications in the Persian Gulf and Far East, the report said.
Forces east of the Suez must be able to be supplemented immediately in an emergency, it added.
