HAND GRENADE EXPLODES
Shrapnel Injures Soldiers Two soldiers of the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, were injured by handgrenade shrapnel at the West Melton range yesterday. The names of the men could not be released, said the commanding officer of the Southern Military District (Brigadier A. H. Andrews) last night This would be done by Army Headquarters, Wellington, he said. Both soldiers suffered only minor leg injuries. The men were in one of the concrete bays when a grenade which was being thrown by a soldier in another bay travelled sideways instead of straight ahead. i The duty officer saw the : grenade land in the bay and ■ tcalled out to the three men: in the bay to leave. The non--commissioned officer hurried one of the men out of the bay. but as he and the other soldier were moving round the comer of the bay the! grenade exploded, and the! flying shrapnel hit them ini the legs.
