Table Tennis Armstrong Comfortably Beats Foster

The Eagles players. J. Armstrong and Mrs J. Shndboft. won the men’s and women's Kindts titles when the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s championships were oondhided ywterday. Tlieir opponents in the finals were B. A. Foster (Otago) and Mn J. Prisk (Eagles). Other titlewinners in the open section ware Foster and R. L. Foster (Southland) in the men's doubles, Mrs Shadbolt and Mrs J, Brown (South Canterbury).in the women's doubles, and Foster and Miss V. Braumann (Otago) in the mixed doubles. The 1931 New Zealand representative, B. A. Foster, wes beaten ftir the second time in eight days by Armstrong in yesterday's final. The Canter, bury player’s victory was much more decisive than his defeat of Foster in the Can-terbury-Otego match recently. Foster called on all his spin and attacking ability in the final, but Armstrong’s defensive and attacking play were superior. Mrs Shadbolt beat Mrs Prisk in a dreary match which lasted more than an hour. Mrs Shedbolt deserved credit for trying to force the pace at timer., and Mrs Prisk on those occasions showed ex. cellent long-range defence. Early Upset An early upset In the men’s singles was the elimination of the fourth-seeded T. R. D. Flint by J. A. Dowie. Dowte is a player of ability who does not always do himself justice, but on Saturday he played patiently against Flint. Careful play and a winning drive were Dowie’s tactics. The other seeded player to fall was J. Taylor (Marlborough). Taylor lost to another Marlborough player, the hard-hitting B. Neal, 24-22 in the fifth game. The other reeded players reached the last eight, although R. L Poster made only uncertain progress through D. V. Fisher G. M. Leech, D. D. M. Skewart, and K. F. Stevenson, four Canterbury A grade players. Mrs Prisk, top-seeded for the women’s singles, looked a likely winner when she convincingly beat Mrs T. May in a semi-final. Mrs Shadbolt in her semi-final had a hard struggle with Mis# Braumann who had beaten Mrs A. Williamson comfortably. The boy’s singles went to M. J. Coppen (University), who beat D. T. Mcßride (Dal. lingfjon) in an interesting final. The tall Coppen hit through Mcßride’s defence in the second and third games Mcßride had a struggle against another University player, the unseeded J. Walsh in a semi-final. Walsh showed flighting ability in recovering from well behind to lose only I at 21-19 in the third game. I Two left-banded players 'met in the girls’ singles final, i in which ' Miss M. McKay | 'Marlborough) beat Miss J Rich (Malvern). Me.ss McKay was too severe for Miss Rich ! in the final. Miss J. Good- ' chap (Eagles) gave a good 'display to take Miss McKay i to a dose match in a semifinal Under-16 singles titlei winners were P. Ives : 'Eagles), who still has an- ' other two yea."s in this grade, '.and Miss L. Elia (Avonside). I Results were:— OPEN EVENTS Men’s Singles , First Round.—D Wtastanley beat J. V.
