Educational Institute Branch Holds Ball
Flowers and greenery were supplied by pupils of the Mt. Pleasant, Sumner and Redcliffs Schools for the annual ball of the North Canterbury branch of the Educational Institute, held in the Winter Garden last evening. Bowls of narcissus and mauve chrysanthemums were featured and balloons and i greenery were festooned j round the light brackets. ■Huge topical cartoons hung in the foyer, lounge and ballroom. They had been drawn by the vice-principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College (Mr J. A. Masterton). Special Guests Guests were welcomed by the president of the branch (Mr M. Amesen) and Mrs Arnesen. Specially invited guests included the Dominion president of the Educational Institute (Mr J. Nesbit) and Mrs Nesbit: the Dominion secretary (Mr G. R. Ashbridge) and Mrs Ashbridge: 'the senior inspector of schools ifor Canterbury (Mr L. J. Broomfield) and Mrs Broomfield; the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr A. Greenwood) and Mrs Greenwood; the superintendent of the southern regional office of the Education Department (Mr T. M. Archer) and Mrs Archer; the chairman of the Post Primary Schools’ Council (Mr W. J. Cartwright) and Mrs Cartwright: the secretary-man-ager of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr W. P. Spencer) and Mrs Spencer: the principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College <Mr G. Guy) and Mrs Guy; the professor of education-, University orf Canterbury (Professor H. E. Field) and Dr. Field: the secretary of the North Canterbury branch of the N.Z.E.I. (Mr G. Maister) and Mrs Maister: the
president of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association (Mr H. C. Anderson) and Mrs Anderson; and the president of the Parent-Teacher Associations’ Federation (Mr L. D. J. Whatman) and Mrs Whatman. Mrs Arnesen wore a gown of west Cumberland lilac brocade. The full skirt fell from box pleats, and the bodice featured tiny sleeves, a round scooped neckline and a violet satin sash crossed under the bodice and falling to the hemline at the back. The ball committee included Misses M. P, McLachlan (chairman), B. B. Evans, and H. R. McCaughern, Messrs C. L. Martin (secretary), R. D. Johnston, B. R. Hansen, R. W. Conway and W. A. Sparks.
