AUCKLAND ASSAULTS

Taxi-Driver Beaten (N Z Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 30. A taxi-driver was badly beaten by a group in Grey Lynn, and a woman was assaulted and robbed of her handbag in Newmarket, in Auckland, last night The taxi-driver, Mr Robert William Mclntyre, aged 41, suffered his injuries while he was in his cab. A group who ordered the cab became violent when he refused to tolerate their bad language Mr Mclntyre was struck while he sat at the wheal. The attackers wrenched open the doors and kicked and hit him from, both sides as he tried to lie across the seat to protect himself. He was coshed several times across toe back of the head, and the weapon was afterwards recovered by the police. The bag-snatching incident occurred about 845 p.m. in Carlton Gore road. Miss Jadwiga Curgol. of Sarawia street, was walking alone when she was rushed by a man, who flung her to the ground in a headlock and then raced away with her handbag.
