French Moves On Farm Prices
PARIg, June 30. The French Government announced last night it was taking “immediate measures" to support falling French farm prices. The announcement came after a three-hour meeting between the Prime Minister (Mr Michel Debre) and farm leaders. The meeting was held after the farmers had called a truce in the “peasants’ revolt.” now three weeks and a half old.
But the truce appeared to have been only partly kept.
In Nimes. southern France. 40 riot police were injured, many seriously, and several farmers slightly hurt in violent clashes. Seven police were taken to hospital—one man with a fractured skull. Riot police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of angry, stone - throwing farmers storming a Prefecture building. The demonstration started in the afternoon with the now traditional tractor parade through the town.
