Illegal Entry ! An elderly London woman. ’Mrs Janet Winn, opened her diary yesterday, and discovered that her house had been burgled. Inside the diary she found an entry written by the thief: “House burgled 5 a m." The thief had stolen £24 from her wallet as she slept in her . Permission has been granted to send a reporter from their newspaper. “Canta,” to council meetings. Meat Prices New maximum retail meat prices have been gazetted to apply from next Monday. In the Canterbury and Marlborough-Nelson-Westland districts pork and first-grade beef will be Id per lb dearer, and hogget and lamb Id cheaper. Mutton prices are unchanged. Fish Scarce There were only nine cases of fish in Christchurch fish markets yesterday because bad weather and heavy seas prevented boats from leaving port. Gurnard, which was the only fish available, sold for 3s a pound in the shops. Better supplies are expected next week. Poisoned Wheat Poisoned wheat, which is available to persons in the Paparua County for the control of small birds, has not been in great demand this year. Only about 501 b had been sold this year, said the County Clerk (Mr A. Kelly). The wheat is available, at a small charge, to farmers wishing to control small birds which eat grain and seeds which have been recently sown.
