HOCKEY INDIANS WIN AGAINST WANGANUI, 4-1

I New Zealand Press Association)

WANGANUI. June 14. With both teams adapting themselves remarkably well to a soft, slippery ground, the Indian Wanderers and Wanganui produced a fine exhibition of hockey and a match of considerable excitement at Wanganui today. The Indians won, 4-1. The Indians were the better side, and fully deserved their win. but Wanganuj offered strong opposition to emerge with fair credit. Wanganui's best play, however. was performed on defence. whereas the Indians were definitely superior in attacking play The Indian forwards, brilliantly led by the captain and inside-left. Udham Singh, whr e cleverness and control delighted a crowd of more than 2500. proved the deciding factor. Their positional play and understanding were exceptional, and their interpassing repeatedly tested the Wanganui defence Udham (2), the left-wing. Darshan Singh, and the centre-forward. Herbinder Singh, were the Indian goalscorers. Wanganui’s goal was scored by the inside-left, W L Bra sting The Indians led. 1-0. at half-time, their first goal coming after 25 minutes of play. They dominated the first spell territorially, but in the second half Wanganui set up several strong attacks. If momentarily bustled on more than one occasion, the Indians conceded the solitary goal while adding three to their own account during the second half There were doubts aboui one successful penalty bully and Udham's second goal, for he appeared to “carry” the

ball—a view supported by (he actions of the Wanganui goal-keeper. J. M. Colway—but there were no doubts about the general superiority of the Indians As a team they had the pronounced ability to keep themselves unmarked. They were cleaner and crisper in passing, and seldom wasted their passes by hitting the ball too far.
