COMMUNISTS IN VIETNAM

“More U.S. Aid Needed”

iN.Z Pres> Assn —CopvMflhtl WASHINGTON, June 11. The small guerrilla-har-rassed country of South Vietnam would not fall to the Communists, the United States Defence Secretary, Mr Robert McNamara, predicted. But South Vietnam would need more United States aid to deal with guerrilla raids from Communist-held North Vietnam, he said. Mr McNamara and the chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Lyman Lemnitzer, testified before the House of Representatives foreign affairs committee in support of President Kennedy's bill calling for 4500 m dollars for foreign aid. The Defence Secretary said the reason that the Administration’s request for military aid was raised from 1600 m dollars in March to 1870 m was stepped-up Communist pressure in Southeast Asia and elsewhere, Mr McNamara said the money asked by Mr Kennedy for military aid spending was a “rock bottom.” figure.
