German Re-armament

Sir.—“P.J.A.” has a touching faith in his party line propaganda for New Zealand, a country in which it may safely be judged on its merits. Had he been a Russian and as critical of the party as he is of our democracy he would have been liquidated or otherwise disposed of many years ago. Does he forget that Stalin, by his own admission, destroyed millions of his fellowcountrymen to force collective farming on them; not to mention millions more in an orgiastic reign of terror <see Boris Pasternak); or the Polish officer class in Katyn Forest? The only people now ruthless enough to keep the eastern Germans armed and the western disarmed are the Russians, the absolutely shameless and successful aggressors since before the end of the war. However. balance of power (which cannot be gainsaid) and Mr Mao will quite probably improve their manners to the West in future. Meanwhile . . —Yours, etc., LGP. June 10, 1961

Sir.—lt is a blessing that decisions of world politics do not depend on '“Caractacus.”; who obviously is full of envy and hatred against the Germans. How can any intelligent person judge a whole nation on account of short acquaintances only? Regarding the statement, "The Germans learn nothing and forget nothing,” tvhat contradictory nonsense! From what I have seen in New Zealand for several years. I can honestly say that the Germans can easily compete with most New Zealanders any day.—Yours, etc., VOICE OF A GERMAN. June 9, 1961.
