U.S. Policy

Sir,—Vice-Admiral Collins’s address was not “adulation” of America, but just plain common sense. Of course it will give offence to the blimps and diehards who rush into print to blame the United States for all the ills of the world. Is this because of what an American author once called “the ancient grudge”? Are they still fighting the War of Independence? Or is it because of the inherent hypocrisy which is one of the less admirable facets of our national character? “Intrigue,” "hypocrisy,” "the use of finance to dominate”— all these terms used by Mr W. B. Bray in his attack upon the United States could be more truthfully used to describe the methods used time and again by England in her heyday. Perhaps Mr Bray includes the Boer War among the instances in which she intervened to save weaker nations?—Yours, etc., LESS HYPOCRISY, PLEASE. June 9. 1961.
