PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

It was expected that S. M. Hope would play his final inter-club squash match this season against Christchurch B this week, but he was out of town and his match with R. G. Pattinson which was expected to be particularly interesting, did not eventuate. The leading Wigram player in the last few seasons, Hope will leave for England soon and he will be missed in Christchurch squash rackets. AAA

The coach of the Canterbury B women’s indoor basketball team, Nola Tregoning, has plenty of practical experience to offer her team. As well as representing the province in outdoor basketball for a number of years, she has played indoor for Canterbury from 1947 until last year. Young players will benefit greatly from her coaching, as she is still a consistent scorer for her club team in the senior competition.

With the transfer of Mr R. George (South Brighton) to Wellington. Canterbury surfing will be the poorer. Mr George is well known to New Zealand s-'-fers as a prominent official at national championships. He is an extremely capable administrator. In his capacity as a Government official, he has seen service in Taranaki, Southland, Wellington and Canterbury. In all these districts he has taken an interest in the surfing movement. AAA A new club that is raising considerable interest in women's indoor basketball circles is the young Chinese Youth Centre team. With many players displaying considerable speed and quickly acquiring the finer points of the game, they will be formidable opponents for B grade teams as the season progresses. AAA It seems likely that G. L. Bird will be unable to compete in the South Canterbury squash rackets

championships which commence at Timaru on Friday. Bird, a former New Zealand representative. is recovering from a recent illness which has kept him away from squash for some weeks. AAA Two well-known Canterbury surfing officia Messrs R. O’Neill and A. T. Dalton (North Beach) have recommended for New Zealand service awards. The recommendations, made by the Canterbury association, will be considered at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association at Wellington in July.
