CATERING IN THE FIELD
Rommel Principle Used One of Field-Marshal Rommel’s principles—‘Before the battle begins the battle is planned and decided by the quartermaster”—was made the theme in a study of administrative and logistic functions and establishments in a pentropic formation during the first day of Exercise Waitara at Burnham yesterday. The Chief of the General Staff (Major-General L. W. Thornton), who is directing the exercise, emphasised the value of giving considerable thought to supply problems in the field. There was no black magic needed, he said. It required a knowledge of the supply and administrative units, their requirements and their capabilities. “While the gilded General Staff can say ‘now that we’ve finished tee battle let’s have some time to relax,’ the administrative and quartermaster chaps live with their problems continuously,” he said. “I shall expect you to include some administration matter in all your tactical exercises, even if it is just how to get hot meals forward,” said General Thornton.
