Police Evidence In Melbourne Fraud

The police inspect in the £lm alleged v case, refused in the . yesterday to say on ’ acted to seize company Detective Inspector William Howard Garvey, attached to the Crown Law Department, said it was not in public interest to answer the question, asked by a defence lawyer. Six men have been charged with conspiracy to defraud the public through the alleged activities of two companies—North American Vending Machine Co., Pty., Ltd., and Vend Rite Pty., Ltd. Records Seized Garvey said that he seized books and records of North American. Vend Rite, General Vending. Halesmere United and Kempmore Industries at their offices after a warrant was issued on his information in August. Mr J. Lazarus, for Kinnear. one of those charged, asked Garvey from whom he got instructions about the warrant. Garvey said he took a c t i on on information received. Mr Lazarus: “Who gave you the information?" Garvey: “I refuse to give my source." Garvey said his information was that the money was lent without security from North American Vending, and that this company then lent £240.000 to four of the accused, again without security.

The information was that it was agreed later that North American should lend £55,000 to Halesmere without security for five years, and that the money should be lent again to men without substance. There was also an agreement that another £25.000 should be lent to first acceptance. and that there should be loans to some of the men. The information was that the company’s resources were not sufficient to support these loans.
