BURNING OF DOG

Petrol Set Alight (AZ Press Association) DUNEDIN. June 8_ A valuable Golden Labrador was badly burnt tonight when petrol was thrown over it and set alight. Its owner smothered the flames after seeing the dog as a "ball of fire” running down the street. The dog. only six months old and of pedigree stock, is owned by Mrs T. H. Black, of 7 Stenhopc crescent, Corstorphine. A veterinary surgeon who was called to the animal said it was the most shocking thing he had seen in many years of working with animals. The surgeon gave the animal about one chance in 10 of living. Tonight the dog was turning round and round on a rug licking the large areas where the skin and hair had been burnt away. It could not lie down. Mrs Black looked out into the street about 630 p.m. to see a “ball of fire” running up the street. She saw it was her dog. Grabbing a clo h she raced to the street and smothered the flames, burning her own hands as well.
