CANADIAN GEESE
Inquiry In Two Months (N.Z. Press Association) OAMARU, June 9. Investigations in the Canadian geese problem would be started in about two months’ time, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) told the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society in a letter. Replying to the society, asking when the investigation was to be carried out. Mr Gotz said he was interested to see that even one of the run holders in the Ohau area had the same interest in Canadian geese as a sporting proposition as he. the societies, and officers of the Wildlife Branch had Mr Gotz said he felt acclimatisation societies in the South Island could do more to foster interest in the bird as a sporting proposition. “The point remains that while it was no doubt necessary to control the numbers of Canadian geese on Lake Ohau. no good reason has been produced why almost all of the birds were destroyed," said Mr Gotz. He was referring to reports that 1040 had been slaughtered in a shoot at Christmas. "Surely there should have been some agreement between the society representatives and those taking part as to either how many birds were to be killed or what proportion of birds.” he said. “If there has been criticism I feel that it is on this aspect. “After all. some organisation must take responsibility for control work, and it is therefore, up to the organisation concerned to see that the result* of the control measures undertaken are reasonable.”
