High Winds Cause Damage At Kaitaia

WHANGAREI. June 9. Winds up to 71 knots gusted over Kaitaia and its surrounding district yesterday, causing an electric power cut for three hours and disruption to some telephone lines Cape Reinga reported this moirkr.g that the wind reached a peak of 95 knots at the lighthouse, with an average of between 50 and 60 knots. Roofing iron was lifted and blown away from some houses and business premises in Kaitaia. a garage at the airport was flattened, -and a few trees were uprooted. Heavy rain caused flooding on the Dargaville-Waipoua Forest road at Mamaranui. While attempting to replace iron on the roof of a house in Kaitaia yesterday afternoon, Mr Wayne Carey received a deep cut across his nose when a sheet of iron curled back and struck him. He was admitted to the Kaitaia Hospital for treatment.

The rainfall recorded at the Kaitaia airport for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. today was 1.23 in. Kaikohe had its wettest day of the year with a fall of 1 87. n. At Whangarei the rainfall for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. today was 2.43 n, and at Ruatangata 2.65 in were recorded in the same period A few sheets of iron were lost off the Cape Reinga lighthouse staff houses and two windows were blown in. There was a very high sea. At Unahi. on the shores of Awanui Harbour. Mr W. Walker’s house was unroofed At Ahipara most of the iron was ripned from the roof of Mr F. A. Fryer's house, but neighbours came out during the storm and nailed it down again.
