CENSURE MOVE ON ANGOLA

America Will Back U.N. Resolution

(K-Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyngh t) NEW YORK, June 9. The United States has decided to side with Asian and African States and the Soviet Union in a move to reprove Portugal for repressive acts in its African territory of Angola. A United Nations delegation spokesman said last night that the United States had agreed to support a Security Council resolution submitted by Asian and African members, provided certain changes were made.

These changes were not described. but it was known that the United States had been trying privately for a l.ne that would be less harsh on Portugal, a partner in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. the “New York Times" said. The United States spokesman would say only that Washington's decision was made known to the resolution's sponsors—Liberia. Ceylon and the United Arab Republic—but it was presumed the decision would not have been announced in the

United Nations unless there was likelihood it w-ould be accepted. The key paragraph in the present text called on Portugal to "desist forthwith from represssive measures” in the African colony, the newspaper said It was considered a strong possibility that the United States would try to broaden the text to get in the idea that all parties concerned — including the Angolans—be called on to refrain from violence.
