CIVIL DEFENCE QUESTIONNAIRES
1000 Sent Out In Kaiapoi About 1000 questionnaires have been sent to householders by the Kaiapoi Borough Council as a preliminary step towards forming a civil defence organisation. It is hoped that answers to the questionnaires will supply information on the number and availability of all forms of transport, Including utility vehicles, earthmoving machinery and boats; residents’ special qualifications; and supplies of petrol and food. "Many people think of a hydrogen bomb explosion as the cause of an emergency," said the Town Clerk (Mr C. W Hodgson) yesterday. “The council felt, however, that a much more likely cause would be the flooding of the Waimakariri river, or an earthquake." Mr Hodgson said the council was attempting to put into effect its own ideas and the ideas of neighbouring local bodies on civil defence and search and rescue organisation.
