Teaching Or Education ?
Sir.—Examples oi Ministerial complacency multiply and do much to explain continued stagnation in the educational field. Mr Holy, oake announces impending le'.tis’aSion designed to improve our way of life. Matters to receive attention include the problems of sex, liquor car-fheft and the Army which at last is to be reequipped. Our educational system is not considered tc be in need, either of attention or re-equinment. The Minister of Education, like i complacent angler boasting ol the size of the one that -got away, announces more thar 2000 inquiries from teachers in England, but only 8f appointments. Briefly. 200( inquired. 600 applied, 20( were interviewed, 86 wert appointed. Mr Tennent con siders our teacher shorta-gt as 700 to 900, a vague but certainly conservative estimate. Can we afford to be sc highly selective as the above figures indicate? Remember they were teachers whe applied.—Yours, etc., FABIAN. June 1. 1961.
