Racing IPSWICH MEETING

N.Z Horses Impress [From the Australian Correspondent of “The Press"] SYDNEY. Randwick and Flemington faded out on Saturday and it was at Ipswich, about 25 miles from Brisbane, that racing centred. The Canterbury Stakes and the Ipswich Cup may have foreshadowed events at the Brisbane carnival which opens on Saturday. Waipari was a starter in the Canterbury Stakes, six furlongs, and finished out of a place, but had the race been seven furlongs, Waipari would have won. Sharply won the Ipswich Cup, continuing his good form in Brisbane since he resumed racing after winning the Sydney Cup. There was a more interesting horse than Sharply in the Ipswich Cup. the New Zealander. Sol d'Or, which was having his first run in Ipswich. Sol d’Or rushed home in third place to Sharply and immediately there was a rush to back him for the Brisbane Cup, his special mission in Australia. Waipari was brought to Australia last year but missed the big races in Brisbane because the stable did not. known that nominations closed car Mer in the season for the big events. Ha was brought to Sydney where he began his campaign by winning in sprint company. Made Favourite His form became so consistent that he was made favourite for the Metropolitan. and the stable was besieged with offers for his purchase. Adolf Basser made an unsuccessful bid of £lO,OOO. Waipari did not quite run up to expectations in the Metropolitan, and lost form to such an extent that even a highly favourable handicap in the Caulfield Cup did not help him in that race. Tliis time the stable has been more cautious with him, and Waipari is going to arrive at the Brisbane carnival at the top of his form, not on the eve of a fadeout However, there has been a constant demand for Sol d’Or for the Brisbane Cup. and gradually he has firmed in the betting order, until today he stands among the most fancied in the field below Sharply and Tulloch, which share favouritism. Sol d’Or had not been produced and people were beginning to wonder whether all was going well with him. Saturday’s race was only over 10 furlongs, and the Brisbane Cup is run over two miles. Sol d’Or dropped out in the early stages, and was still last, with half a mile to go. but his long run enabled him to be a good third and had a little more use been macle of him he would have troubled Sharply.
